Riparian Drift is a moody coalescence of the past and the present. Made as a collaboration with FALA Design Studio, we wanted a sculpture that celebrated the material and highlighted our studios' fabrication capabilities. This piece started with reclaimed cypress, chosen for its exaggerated grain and rich history as a building material. We then employed advanced digital fabrication techniques to accentuate the wood's natural imperfections and complex patterns.
The undulating form of the sculpture is inspired by the landscape of the riparian zones that produce cypress trees. The charred finish then enhances the wood's texture and symbolizes the resilience and transformation that these trees experience over the course of their life.
Crafted with robotic precision, Riparian Drift creates a compelling interplay of light and shadow. The carved surfaces invite tactile and visual exploration, revealing new details and depths from every angle. This piece is not just a testament to the capabilities of modern craftsmanship, but also a tribute to the enduring beauty of nature and our connection to it.
